POWDER RIVER BASIN - Marking the Land
“The business of art is to reveal the relation between man and his circumambient universe at the living moment.” D. H. Lawrence
THE POWDER RIVER BASIN - a magnificent rolling prairie that sweeps from the Black Hills to the Big Horn Mountains is embedded in our collective American mythology of wagon trains, Indians, cowboys and the big open range. It is rich in marks from other times - petrified tree trunks, teepee rings, wagon ruts, fence lines – all tell stories. The most recent markings are from the newly opened coalbed methane fields where seemingly over night thousands of gas wells, roads and pipelines have created a startling new overlay on the landscape. MARKING THE LAND seeks to document a unique place that has a deep resonance far beyond its own boundaries.
